Linear actuators are used to move and lift loads where air or hydraulics for cylinders are not possible. Actuators are also increasingly used in everyday life to move furniture, solar panels, antennas, open doors, etc. Linear actuators are lightweight and operate reliably and relatively quietly, requiring no special maintenance. The operation of actuators is similar to that of cylinders, where an electric motor is used as the drive. This converts circular motion into reciprocating motion via a spindle and a nut. The nut is stationary and the spindle moves. The pitch of the thread and the rotational speed of the motor determine the speed of the movement.
The lifting forces can be very high due to the gearing in the thread and the additional gear preload. The actuator travel is controlled by limit switches, Hall sensors or overload sensors. The supply voltage is usually 12 V or 24 V. Control is possible via the original controllers or via an interface.
A wide variety of actuator designs are available, depending on stroke length, speed and thrust force. DC electric actuators, asynchronous electric actuators and actuator accessories are available from various manufacturers Timotion, Hiwin, Setec and Elesa.
