Mechanical seals

Mechanical seals are used in pumps, mixers and other systems where sealing plays an important role in meeting the highest safety and efficiency requirements in the production process.

They are increasingly being used instead of traditional methods of sealing pumps with sealing cords, as they overcome some of their shortcomings and thus help to make the hardware more reliable. The lower consumption of drive energy to rotate the shaft and the lower friction or wear of the sealing material are the most important advantages of using mechanical seals compared to string seals.

A mechanical (sliding) seal consists of a static element fixed to the machine housing and a rotating element mounted directly on the shaft. The two elements are applied to each other with a certain preload achieved by springs and rotate on precisely machined sliding surfaces. An extremely thin coating layer, typically up to three micrometres thick, is created between them by the movement of a liquid lubricant, which prevents excessive wear due to friction and heat.

Depending on the design, there are several types of sliding seals and their most common applications are in automotive water pumps, washing machines, compressors, pumps for agricultural machinery, etc. In the field of mechanical seals, we represent the world renowned seal manufacturer Lidering, where they have developed one of the most advanced seals for the most chemically aggressive applications, the LTB16 mechanical seal.
