Chain drives are versatile due to their reliable and economical transmission of rotational motion. They are found in vehicles, agricultural and machine tools, transport equipment, mining and more. Chains are made up of links, manufactured from high-alloy steels and heat-treated. They can withstand the highest loads and operate in all environments. Their mass production and standardised dimensions keep their price relatively low. The torque transmission is very precise as there is no slippage. They are divided into leaf, drive and transport. Leaf chains are further subdivided according to the shape and number of slats, while drive chains are subdivided according to the shape and number of parallel links.

Leaf chains are designed to carry heavier loads. Their links consist of several slats connected by bolts. They are standardised according to the shape and number of slats. They can carry very high tensile loads.

Drive chains are designed to transmit torque. They consist of two slats connected by a pin, which may also have a roller to reduce friction. These chains are also called gal chains. They can be single-row or multiple-row, and they can carry the corresponding loads.

The link in the conveyor chain is a round wire joined in an ellipse. Load chains do not have bearers on the links. Conveyor chains carry the load and have bearers on the links.
