Seals are machine elements that prevent the sealing medium from escaping from the system and protect individual machine parts from dirt and moisture, dust ingress, extreme temperatures and high pressures. The correct selection, installation and maintenance of the seal are of utmost importance in sealing. Effective sealing has a significant impact on the optimum performance of machinery, plant and equipment, thereby extending their service life. The effectiveness of a seal depends primarily on its adhesion and optimum surface pressure, but it must also have adequate chemical and temperature resistance, elasticity, tightness and tensile strength. At the first sign of seal wear, replacement is necessary.

Dynamic seals seal surfaces during movement, so the use of a suitable lubricant at the time of installation is often recommended. Typical examples of such seals are mechanical seals, hydraulic and pneumatic seals, braided sealing cords, etc. Static seals are used to seal stationary surfaces, especially flanges, preventing leakage at joints and contamination of the medium.
